Lizzie Greenwood: British Activist on Day 19 of Hunger Strike in Solidarity with Palestine
Across Britain, protests continue to grow louder as more voices condemn the UK government’s unwavering support for Israel. Among these voices stands Lizzie Greenwood, a 28-year-old British activist who has launched a powerful individual protest— a hunger strike now in its 19th day—to send a clear message to the British government.
A Turning Point: From Apathy to Activis
Speaking to Al Jazeera Mubasher, Greenwood explained that she, like most Britons, had spent her life being told that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was “too complicated” and had no solution. However, the events of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Israeli assault on Gaza, changed everything for her.
“That day truly opened my eyes to everything that had happened—and is still happening.”
Reflecting on a year of genocide, protests, petitions, and political pressure, Greenwood expressed frustration that the British government continues to ignore calls for justice.
“If my body and my health are the only things I have left to fight with, I will use them to defend Palestine.”
Her goal, she says, is to force people to confront their moral responsibility.
“Why do you see your own comfort and well-being as more important than the lives of hundreds—if not thousands—of people in Palestine and Lebanon?”
“Britain Is Complicit in Israel’s Crimes”
Greenwood firmly believes that Britain is deeply complicit in Israel’s war crimes, and she urges her fellow citizens to take action, resist, and reject this complicity.
“The UK plays a major role in enabling Israel’s massacres against Palestinians. Every British citizen bears a responsibility to stop this support.”
Beyond protesting government policies, Greenwood hopes her hunger strike will awaken British society’s moral conscience.
“I want this message to reach those who refuse to acknowledge that our money and weapons are being used to destroy the homes and identity of another people. I want to inspire those who have never been involved in this movement before.”
“My Life Is Not More Important Than Theirs”
Despite growing concerns over her health, Greenwood refuses to stop her hunger strike, insisting that she will continue until the British people take decisive action.
“I know my family, my friends, and society at large are worried about me. But I want them to really consider this: why is my life considered more important than the lives of thousands of innocent people in Palestine and Lebanon?”
“The Masks Have Fallen”
For Greenwood, this struggle is about more than just Palestine—it is about exposing the true nature of Western politics.
“The identity of the United Kingdom is being reshaped before our eyes—and it is hideous.”
She argues that Britain’s national identity has now become intertwined with war crimes, starvation, and genocide.
“People have had enough of the lies. They no longer trust Western politics.”
Greenwood believes that this crisis has caused an irreversible rupture, one that could permanently damage the credibility of Western governments.
“This collapse might be difficult—perhaps impossible—to repair in the future.”
As her hunger strike continues, Greenwood’s act of defiance stands as a testament to the growing resistance against British and Western complicity in Israel’s war on Palestine.
